PETRA, discovered in 1812 by French archeologists
in Jordan, was the model for the city of Kivala in the Atlas Mountains
of the North African desert in THE COMPANION. The surrounding landscape
shows the washes carved out of the plateaus by rainwater runoff.
These are the canyons into which the temples and tombs were carved.
In the center of the city was a huge open space for arenas and public
gatherings. I used the temple called The Treasury as the model for
the entrance to the Temple of Waiting. For you Indiana Jones buffs,
it was also used by George Lucas as the Temple of Doom. |
