THE MAKING OF
THE "ONE WITH THE NIGHT" BOOK TRAILER®

By Sheila Clover English

What if your daughter was infected…by a vampire? What if you were a man of science, able to work on a cure?

I wondered how Susan Squires could possibly top the premise of her last novel, THE BURNING. In that one, a woman could touch someone and see their history. And, while trying to help a wounded man, she touches a vampire. Wow! What an incredible idea for a story and what an incredible book!

But, Susan outdoes herself with her newest novel, ONE WITH THE NIGHT. What if you were infected by a vampire? What if you found someone like you, who was willing to be experimented on? And, what if only one of you was able to be cured?

We were thrilled when Susan called COS Productions to ask us to make a book trailer® for her novel. Her imagination is always so vivid and fresh, and she always gives us a lot of great material to work with.

ONE WITH THE NIGHT is a very sensual tale with a very fresh storyline. Susan didn't want the video to be too horrific because the love story is front and center of this tale. So, we started working on a script that would not have too many dark elements. But, the video itself is dark. Not because the story is, though it does have vampires and murder in it. The video is dark because director Kyle Lake had a very specific look he was going for with this video.

"Creating the book trailer for ONE WITH THE NIGHT was an exciting experience for Prosper Media Group," says Lake who directed and produced the video. "The endeavor was our first project with production partner, Circle of Seven and the first book trailer we have produced. Overall the process went very smoothly from pre to post and the unique shooting style that we adopted made the project not only challenging but entirely original. By not actually showing the character's faces we were able to leave more to the imagination of the reader. A vampire love story allowed us to take a more artistic approach to special effects and lighting using shadows and a variety of lighting gels and filters. The production was simple yet quite effective and we look forward to working with Circle of Seven on many, many more projects in the future."

The video tried not to show faces so that the viewers could use their imagination. And the unique style of the video was very reminiscent of the hit movie, The Illusionist. There's almost a ring of black around many of the scenes in ONE WITH THE NIGHT, as there are in many of the scenes of The Illusionist (click here to view the trailer). Both videos are period pieces with a supernatural feel to them.

Many of the scenes were shot with a stylized view. This did make the video look physically darker, even though it isn't dark in content. The content itself came directly from the book, which is paranormal.

From the very beginning of the video the viewer is set up to accept this style of filmmaking as we see our heroine running in slow motion, trying to escape her fate.

The fact that her father is such an important part of the story made it necessary to include that character in the video. Since he wasn't the main character we let his face be seen as he works diligently to find the cure for his, now vampire, daughter.

This is the most stylized book trailer® ever created by COS Productions. But, when the video was first previewed, people absolutely loved it. Sometimes when you try a new style of filmmaking you don't know if the audience will accept it or not. But, the story itself really leant to making the style work with this video.

The story is as complex as it is riveting to read. Our heroine falls in love with another vampire, a man who has been haunted and hunted by other vampires. He was made vampire against his will, and yearns for his mortal life. Now, the opportunity comes. But, of course, nothing is ever so simple. There are some vampires who do not want a cure created. And they are willing to kill in order to have the experiments stopped.

The final decisions that these characters have to make are what really brings this novel to a higher level. At every turn you wonder, 'how will this get resolved?' as the author throws the characters into situations that are unexpected. It makes this book an exciting read as well as a satisfying one.
